Do you find yourself waking up in the morning with a sore throat, headache, or fatigue? Lack of sleep has become a public health issue in our country, and for good reason. When you don’t get a good night’s sleep or enough sleep, there are a lot of things that can happen, with most of them not being good for you or for your health. Sleep deprivation can result in both short-term and long-term problems.
Short-term effects can leave you with impaired memory and difficulty staying alert throughout the day. You may also find yourself experiencing mood swings and having conflicts with those around you. You may find yourself gaining weight, suffering from depression and experiencing lessened libido. You might notice yourself mired in forgetfulness and poor memory.
Medical conditions resulting from chronic sleep deprivation can leave you with high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke or diabetes. Another serious side effect is drowsy driving, which increases your risk of being in a collision. Your immune system also suffers, and you may be more prone to colds and flu. It can also compromise the effectiveness of vaccines. Long-term disruption to your immune system makes you vulnerable to disease and illness, like cancer.
Sleep Study Testing
To help diagnose a sleep disorder, Dr. Abroon and our team may perform a sleep study test. Your symptoms will determine whether you should have the test at-home or in-office. This is a non-invasive evaluation is done overnight by monitoring your brain and body while you sleep.
A sleep lab allows us to monitor your sleep stages and the cycles of REM and nonREM sleep. We look for disruptions in your sleep cycle, using sensors to measure eye movements and oxygen levels in your blood, as well as snoring, heart rates and breathing rates, and body movements. If you have trouble falling asleep, we may help you with medications to help you relax and feel comfortable.
Evaluating your sleep can help Dr. Abroon determine whether:
-You have insomnia or jet lag
-You suffer from narcolepsy
-If you have sleep apnea
-If and why you snore
-You have restless legs syndrome
The sleep study is performed by a technologist and then Dr. Abroon will evaluate your results. In about two week’s time, you will be scheduled for a follow-up visit with Dr. Abroon to review your results and treatment options.
