October Is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and We Have Some Tips for You!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness and the nation is talking about how breast cancer affects women and even men. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, every two minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer. Thankfully, research advancements, surgical enhancements and clinical trials are giving women more options than ever before and early detection increases the survival rate. Performing monthly breast self-exams help give women a fighting chance to beat this disease.

Breast Cancer Facts

National Today reveals some important breast cancer facts:

  • While breast cancer is more common in American white women it is more fatal for African-American women.
  • A woman’s left breast develops breast cancer more often than her right breast.
  • ​Breast cancer surgery was the first operation that used anesthesia to prevent pain during surgery.
  • ​Although a mere one percent of American males are diagnosed with breast cancer, African-American men are at greater risk of succumbing to the disease.
  • ​Women who never have children are at greater risk of dying from breast, ovarian and uterine cancers, compared with women giving birth which is related to the higher number of menstrual cycles a woman experiences.

Eating Your Way To Better Breast Health

Along with monthly breast self-exams and regular mammograms, eating healthy helps lower the risk of breast cancer. Check out these foods for better breast health.

-Peanut Butter: The Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and Harvard Medical School found that girls eating peanut butter (or peanuts) had 39 percent less chance of developing benign breast disease (BBD) which could leads to breast cancer.

-Plums and Peaches: Texas A&M researchers found that plums and peaches boast antioxidant levels rivaling their “superfood” cousin, blueberries.

-Walnuts: Marshall University School of Medicine in West Virginia found that mice consuming walnuts were half as likely to develop cancer.

-Broccoli: The University of Michigan revealed that a compound in broccoli, Sulforaphane, reduces the amount of breast cancer stem cells in mice.

-Salmon: Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention study found that fish-oil supplements taken for at least 10 years can shrink your risk of the most common form of breast cancer (ductal carcinoma).
